Yesterday, discussing the “Hanged Man”, I mentioned the Sanctuary of Madonna della Quercia, and today I read that our Mayor writes: “in this pandemic that is striking the whole world, together with Bishop Don Lino Fumagalli and Don Massimiliano I have exceptionally renewed the Pact of Love, and I have handed the Keys of our city to its keeper. Five keys for the five values on which to build our future together: welcome, truth, memory, freedom, faith.” The number 5 is that of man, mediator between God and the universe; the human figure is inscribed in a pentagram for this reason, because the head governs the four limbs just as the spirit governs the four elements. And so the figure of the “Pope”, Arcanum No. V, represents a point of meeting and circulation between opposites. The cross becomes a crossroads at whose centre right joins left and above joins below, thus uniting Heaven and Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The “Pope” represents a bridge: in his role as master he is receptive upward and active downward, and what he receives from above he passes on to the disciples beneath him. The artists who first drew the tarot could not help but encounter contrasts, exactly as happens in life, at times even taking pleasure in them. And so the “Pope”‘s face, though sombre, cannot help but also hold an expression of gentleness. The “Pope” wears white gloves to show that his hands remain pure, with a cross placed upon them to underline that his way of acting is pure and disinterested. Seated between two columns marking the limits within which the human spirit moves, the “Pope” addresses his two “disciples” while keeping to the just middle, since his task is to govern and balance, setting man’s tendencies against one another so that none degenerates into vice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My personal pairing among the Arcana of Faul is Alexander IV. In 1254 this Pope was elected and had a pontificate of just seven years. Alexander IV died on 25 May 1261 in Viterbo, where years earlier he had prudently moved the papal seat, fearing the persecutions and uprisings that in that historical period beset the Church of Rome. For the same reasons, after his death, to avoid desecration and looting, his remains were hidden inside the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, where to this day they rest in a secret place. He initiated the canonisation process of Saint Rose, and to him we owe the first transport of the Macchina and the introduction of the “facchini” (porters) figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The “Pope” never appears alone but is accompanied by two figures, since he would not exist without the disciples who believe in and follow his teaching. The “Pope” represents a master, a guide, a teacher, and this gives me the chance to praise a person who, about a year ago, believed in — and turned into reality — a project concerning the town where he lives and teaches: Grotte Santo Stefano. This person has a name, and as the tarot teaches us, arcana must be revealed: his name is Orlando Serafini. He conceived house numbers inspired by some of the town’s architecture, starting a genuine spread of beauty at a time unsuspectingly far from the coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just as the cards were not conceived individually but as part of a whole, in the same way a residential cluster is made up of each single home, which takes on a meaning of community when it establishes relationships among its neighbours. The choice to include a sacred place with its own colour scheme turns a simple image — painted by me on a slab of peperino — into a symbol in which everyone can recognise themselves, developing their sense of integration, identity and belonging within the community. This teacher is teaching, in a different but absolutely inspiring way, a love with a deep sense of belonging to that place, because he knew how to imagine it in the right way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The “Pope” points to one who, driven by a deep vocation, initiates “the disciples” into life, indicating a path towards an ideal dimension; in the same way, teachers, as if in a confessional, want to draw their students out — not in secrecy, but rather letting them freely “cry out”, turning a “pack” into a swarm of bees that produce honey. In this “coronavirus moment” there are two professional figures I ideally link to Arcanum No. V: the doctors who save our lives and the teachers who save the souls of our young people. Just as in the iconography of the Pope card we see this sacred figure imparting a blessing to his faithful, in the same way only a true spiritual master can reveal our inner treasure to us. Across this bridge that the “Pope” casts for us, let us come together in the meeting with our architectures of the soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\"\"<\/picture>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
