The Arcanum I feel closest to at this moment is the Hermit, Number IX, which among the “Arcana of Faul” I paired with Saint Jerome. This card has sometimes also been called “The Old Man” or “The Sage”, and its general meaning is that of wisdom and asceticism, but also of caution and prudence. After all, one engaged in the eternal search for truth must live isolated from the world.
On the card we see a wise old man with a long beard, walking slowly, supported by his staff; with one hand he holds up a lamp to light the way, and it can be seen as a symbol of knowledge, raised to illuminate the past like a man full of experience. To reach love for all things one must withdraw into solitude — the essence of knowledge is the knowledge of essence.
The number 9 announces both an end and a beginning. The Hermit actively concludes his relationship with the old world and becomes receptive towards a future he does not yet master and does not yet know. The Hermit represents a step into the unknown, and in this sense expresses both the greatest wisdom and a state of profound crisis. Without isolation, nothing can become concentrated; energies silently gathered with patience, sheltered from all worldly frivolity, will take shape. It is fair to see in the Hermit the outward architect of that invisible structure without which no vital construction would be possible.
The Hermit does not address the crowds and lets only seekers of truth approach him: he confides in them only once he has made sure they are capable of understanding, since the wise man “does not cast pearls before swine”. In doing so, the Hermit matures his conceptions, intensifying his will by reining it in; he does not worry about immediate effects but concentrates on the energies that produce future formations. This dreamer can therefore prepare wonderful events, becoming the true architect of what is to come.
The city seems empty, though it is not; we are invisible, just like the virus; we are in our homes, isolated like the Hermit; we must carry out our mission to reach the light by venturing into the darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
