The passage of pilgrims along the Via Francigena in Viterbo, on Via San Pellegrino, in the medieval quarter of the same name, brings me many special encounters. Each one has an extraordinary story or a special goal to reach. In Cinzia Chiulli’s Percorsi Artistici workshop on Via San Pellegrino, 27, pilgrims of the Via Francigena stop to rest and chat for a while… and also to leave their mark. “Your step is already history”: a signature on peperino, our grey volcanic stone, immortalizes their passage through Viterbo. In the Borgo di San Pellegrino, life has picked back up, the desire to rediscover the joy of being together; in the everyday routine of my work I get the pleasant surprise of hosting a tourist, a pilgrim, and opening a door onto the wonderful medieval world and the glorious history of our City of Viterbo. It is the pilgrims who, for centuries, have amazed us and continue to do so. I don’t want to steal the spotlight from them, but I invite you to follow their journey, which joins ours, especially in the pictures. THANK YOU again for your stories, for your smiles (still hidden by masks), your gazes. THANK YOU. I met Romeo, 10 years old, walking from Palermo to London. The incredible story of a small, great pilgrim.
