On 16 May, in the days immediately preceding the Buongiorno Ceramica event, the City of Viterbo had the honour of being the star of a special episode of the French programme “Journal de 13 heures”. This important television broadcast, also aired in Italy, offered viewers a rich exploration of Viterbo’s historical and cultural heritage, highlighting its extraordinary medieval legacy and the craft traditions that still make it unique today.
The episode began in the heart of the medieval San Pellegrino district, a true jewel of historic architecture. The ancient stone houses and charming little squares provided the backdrop for a journey through time that immediately captured the audience’s attention.
The television itinerary then continued at the workshop of ceramicist Cinzia Chiulli, owner of the “Percorsi Artistici” workshop. The artisan welcomed the TV crew by opening the doors of her studio and telling the rich story of Viterbo’s ceramic tradition, with particular attention to the Zaffera, a refined raised blue decoration dating back to the 15th century. With passion and pride, Cinzia Chiulli stated: “It was a pleasant surprise to host this programme and see how much space it gave to the history of the City of Viterbo. From its ancient workshops to its museums, from its fascinating thermal springs to the rich artistic and culinary tradition that makes this place so special“.
The televised visit continued at the Papal Palace of Viterbo, a place of immense historical value that has hosted no fewer than nine popes. The Papal Palace, with its majestic architecture and the wealth of stories it holds, is a symbol of the central role Viterbo played in Christianity.
Finally, the programme placed emphasis on another attraction: the thermal springs. The famous Terme dei Papi, today a modern wellness centre, still bear witness to the popes’ ancient passion for Viterbo’s thermal waters.
These springs, valued for their beneficial properties, remain a strong draw for those seeking relaxation and wellbeing.
The “Journal de 13 heures” episode managed to highlight not only Viterbo’s historical and cultural charm, but also the vitality of its craft traditions, offering a fascinating and engaging overview of a city that continues to live and thrive while honouring its rich heritage.
