A heartfelt thank you to the President of CNA, Dario Costantini, who, together with Luigia Melaragni, Regional Secretary, visited my studio Cinzia Chiulli Percorsi Artistici in Viterbo, at Via San Pellegrino 27, on 15 March. During the visit, he managed to understand and truly “enter” my creative approach, which, as well as respecting history and ancient techniques, is above all aimed at stirring an emotional response.
It was interesting how quickly the President grasped the idea that “games” are a serious matter – it is indeed there that we find all of life’s metaphors: the dark moments, the trials to overcome, the happy moments, all leading to “us”, yet different from who we were when we first began “working” on ourselves.
The symbolism of the designs on plates and jugs – the magical, mystical ones of the “Arcana of Faul”, and that of life’s “dynamism” enacted through the roll of the dice used in the “Game of the Goose” – becomes a tool for reflection.
“Vado, Giro e Tornio” (“I Go, I Turn, I Spin”), the Game of the Goose, is a ceramic work, a tribute I made to the city of Viterbo, meaning that it is only through a “leftward” path that one reaches a deep knowledge of oneself.
The President, with the wise lightness of someone who has processed life’s experiences, invited me to roll the dice together with him, and surprisingly, we both “landed” on the square that best represented each of us.
As children, we played with unaware lightness, and if as adults we can do the same, but with a conscious lightness, and carry it into our work too, then we have truly understood the meaning of life.
